Communication explained
Understanding App Messaging, SMS, and Phone Calls
Understand why communication channels have different delivery paths, requirements, and privacy boundaries.
A conversation can contain different services
Communication apps can present several channels in a familiar interface. That convenience does not make their underlying delivery methods identical. It helps to distinguish an app message, a carrier SMS, an app call, and a call to an ordinary telephone number before deciding how to communicate.
App messaging and carrier SMS
In-app messaging connects people through the application’s messaging system. SMS travels through carrier messaging services to a telephone number. A recipient’s device, account status, and the selected channel affect which route can be used. Signal Protocol-based in-app messaging does not make a carrier SMS a Signal-encrypted message.
App calling and telephone calling
An app call uses a real-time media connection between participating app clients. Telephone calling reaches numbers through a carrier network. Bringing a telephone participant into an app conversation introduces that network into the communication path. Read the product’s notices for the calling mode being used rather than assuming every call has identical protections.
A useful check before connecting
Check the recipient, channel, network connection, and any displayed price or plan requirement. Consider the sensitivity of the conversation and the protections specifically described for that feature. If the interface or documentation leaves a question unanswered, contact product support.
